A Little Less Lazy in 2009

Happy New Year!

I have indeed been quite lazy in terms of posting during the past month. Since the New Year is a time for new beginnings, I would like to share with you the theme of my New Year’s goals.

Diligence

Diligence is an attribute which all Mormons are encouraged to seek. It is true that hard work comes in handy for people of all belief systems, and Mormons are certainly not alone in their quest to become more diligent. I have always admired people who clearly have a strong work ethic. I have also never been one of these people.

So, 2009 is the year! The Nils you knew before will hopefully fade away, and a newer, diligenter Nils will hopefully emerge. As part of this quest to become more diligent, I will consider consistent weekly postings on my blog to be an essential goal.

In addition, I wish to focus the purpose of this blog. In essence, it is designed to be a place for discussion. All aspects of Mormonism have been touched in the past six months, including the doctrine, the culture, and the history of Mormonism. While they are all fascinating and inter-connected in many ways, I have always been more interested in what makes the Mormon belief system unique. Therefore, I would like to discuss the core doctrines of Mormon belief primarily during the next several posts.

In the meantime, I would be interested in hearing what doctrines are more interesting to you. I would also be curious to hear what character-related New Year’s resolutions you have, if any, and if they are not too private.

I've never been a big fan of New Year's Resolutions. I almost never keep them because I don't want it enough. So now I don't even bother. If I want to accomplish something I just decide to have it as a goal no matter what time of year it is. That's why my most successful change in lifestyle that resulted in significant weight loss started in July 2002. I guess I have goals related to my upcoming motherhood. My main goal is to not screw it up too much (and to get through this pregnancy without performing a c-section on myself). According to my mom and my child psychologist friend, it's actually quite difficult to really screw things up. I hope they are right!

Diligence is a good thing. I think most people could do with some improvement in that quality.

For a second there I thought it said 'a little less lacy in 2009', which I would agree with, though lace has it's place, there's nothing wrong with it, especially in on an old lady's side table or head, but for a blog discussing Mormonism and especially this turn towards the uniquiety of it, lacy didn't seem right, and I agreed.

Now that I re-read it, however, the whole concept of being less lazy seems to fly in the face of blogging. You see, before the internet, one had to mail out letters, and before the typewriter, they had to be hand-written. The responses would likewise have to be written by hand and then mailed back to you, and at that point, collected by you, appended as late responses trickled in, and then copied several times and mailed out back to the same people the first went to. Blogging is clearly much lazier than this. It is also much much lazier than writing on golden plates, but we won't go back that far in history.

Which raises an interesting question: what other famous examples of historical records are recorded on gold plates, or even metal, such as brass, does anyone know?

Like Tara I do not really like new year's resolutions, because I like to change things whenever they start bothering me and would prefer not to wait for a certain date. but if I had a resolution it would be to try to not avoid committments anymore; which applies to all spheres of my life- committing to a stable full time job, relationship and settling down somewhere for a while at least. I think this would be healthy for me in the long term, but I do not plan to do it all at once :) maybe over the next couple of years? This resolution will certainly keep me busy for a while...

It's amazing how time flies! It's already 2009?? This year, I'd like to believe anything can be achieved. Ya know how sometimes you get caught up in all the reasons why something won't work out, rather than thinking of all the reasons why it should?

So this year, I'd like to be a believer in all the good things our future holds.
